No one in this world can define creativity accurately, but still, many individuals in this world come out with their own perspective of creative definition. For example:
seeing the same way > different way of thinking (Shekerjian,D,1990)
doing something first of all unusual (Howard Gardner,1992)
Novelty is something that is so familiar within the creativity aspect. What is novelty?
Novelty = quality of being new, exist in subjective perception of individuals.
In this context, ORIGINALITY is not a decisive feature. Novelty in creativity is always based on what has been created before.
The study of creativity, based on the presumption of novelty, aims to explain how original works are produced and created. See, novelty can contrast a thing to be perceived by individuals as either new or old..
So, to make it simpler, i just make it like this,
BORROWING > RECURRING = NOVELTY PRODUCTION!
Creativity: generation of new ideas or a new way of doing things
Innovation: process of making improvement by introducing something new, the realization of a creative idea in a social contact.
Innovation and creativity is a mutual aspect. Why? see..
innovation = changing creative ideas* into goods/ services that people will pay for it.
*but, that idea must satisfy a specific need and replicable at an economic cost.
innovation can be divided into 2 parts
EVOLUTIONARY
Continuous ( alteration in product's characteristic in a new product, do not require user-learning or changes in user routine. Ex. multi-blade shaver, flouride toothpaste)
Dynamic ( require user-learning, but do not disrupt individual's routine. Ex. fax machines, hand-held computers)
REVOLUTIONARY
require good deal of user-learning, but eventually will disrupt their routine, and then develop the different from their actual behaviour .

ReplyDeleteI always compare my artwork, my pictures to my friends, sometimes i feel that their artworks are better that me, but sometimes also they tell me that my artwork is better than theirs. Maybe this is what i should call novelty is all about.
When there is something new, that no one ever see it before, people will start noticing that this is new, this is different from the rest that they've seen before, they'll appreciate it as something new.
In the aspect of consumerism, novelty value helps us in choosing product with different prospects that we want. If we have sense of novelty, we'll surely consume something that is latest in its technology and style.

Innovation brings about many changes in the production and usage of various products and machinery, whether it is for the better or for worse.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I find it sad that some products nowadays felt as if they are ripping each other off, like Samsung's Galaxy Tabs and Mac's iPads. It felt as if there's hardly any creativity in creating products that not only look but also FUNCTIONS similarly just to rival an existing product created by another, different company. Instead of competing with each other, I think they should just focus more on creating newer and better products for the usage of the public.

One is not stylish or creative when one sees a really good style from others and decided to copy it off and simply have a minor difference in that certain style . But when one decided to add something up and tweak a little of it , that can be called innovation .

ReplyDeleteAs a student, I feel that no matter how little an innovation is, it's worth looking at the small changes from all aspects. Even a little progress can make a difference. For example the difference between iPhone 3G and 3GS, one operating a little faster than the other. It makes a difference because it causes less inconvenience to the user. I don't find it a waste if one can make it so that it withstands more application. Like recycling; one little change can make a huge difference. No one can say anything is wrong. However, everything has its side effects.
To say novelty is something new is not particularly accurate, only the fact that it is something never before seen by anyone else. However, the same exact idea can generate within more than one person, so there's no harm in two different companies innovating one device into another, giving it the same traits. Here the idea is not new, but whoever carries it out first, is seen as the people worth accredited to.
After doing a little research on what my dear friend have posted, I figured that novelty is not always new. Most of the technologies nowadays are almost look alike. Easier to say everything new has been copied from the old one, for example, before iPad even exist other similar things have already been created, like tablet. But on the positive side way of thinking, we can see variety of choices with different design and creativity has been put into but they work almost the same way.
ReplyDeleteOther than having novelty in our life, innovation is also an important matter to all human. Innovation is something that we recreate by thinking of a new idea or remodelling things from a complex to simpler goods. By having to create new, simple, satisfy the specific needs of a person and also affordable can help to ease the burden for the poor people that could not even pay for the expensive services or goods.
Although some of the things have so many negative effects, we should change our way of thinking to a more positive way and try to improve to make a better way to solve the problem.

Well, for a start, I somehow agree with the article and opinions above to the extent that I believe innovation is very crucial in this era for the means of development of technologies. However, innovation (such as products) only focus in commercial value and profitable to an organization unlike invention. Some companies might have produced different qualities of items, materials and appearances but the function is still the same like hand phones, computers and so on. So, it all depends on the society interest itself to judge them whether they support it or not. In addition, novelty is not an essential part in innovation. It is more or less like upgrading the invention using creativity as a process to solve the problem.
Inventions, in the other hand, are creating something new and mostly focus in novelty than commercial value. But at the same time, it holds great risk and disruptions in the process especially when we invent something that is previously not exist in the first place. The same goes for Thomas Edison who had to put many efforts, failures and patience just to make one bulb. And yes, sometimes being an inventor cost us a lot of fortune and the worst part is it doesn’t mean what you invented will be accept by the society wholly.
In fact, like in previous post, everything that we do, we need creativity in the process to find solutions...and whether it gives us a positive or the opposites effects, it all goes back to the individuals...

Novelty is really important in human life because it show how the original work produced in our life. Nowadays, we can see a lot of similarity between the work and design. But we can see they try to improve it to attract and satisfy the consumer.
Innovation is to produce something new and different from other. Innovation need a creativity to bring out and develop the idea to become larger at different rates. Defining the idea by thinking is for improving the human living standard and help the development of modern industry.
